Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I calculate how much tile I need?
To best calculate the amount of tile that you need, measure the dimensions of your area in feet. For rectangular areas, multiply the two dimensions in feet to get the area in square feet. We recommend adding an additional 10% on top of your measurement to account for cutting, waste, etc.
Example
Measure your room. In this case, it is 12'6" by 10'9". Which is 12.5 feet by 10.75 feet.
Multiply them: 12.5x10.75 = 134 square feet.
Add 10%: 134x1.10 = 147 square feet.
If you are having any issues determining how much tile you need, you can always call us at 416-674-4500 and we will happily assist you with calculations.
What is your return and exchange policy?
We do not accept returns and exchanges on the following items: installation materials (including mortar, grout, glue, caulking, primers, etc.), natural stone products (marble, granite, travertine, stones, etc.), damaged goods.
Items acceptable for return or exchange must be returned to the store at your own cost. You will receive a store credit equal to the value of the returned items in acceptable condition.
Can I get samples?
Yes, you can purchase a sample of any tile using the "Order Sample" button on the product page.
The sample will be a small 6"x6" piece, to give you the chance to inspect the colour and finish of the product. However, you will not be able to see the full pattern & design from the sample.
Your sample will be shipped to the address you select in checkout included in the price.
Please refer to the product images to see the full pattern of your tile.

Why do my tiles look different when I buy them at two separate times?
Every time the manufacturer runs a new production of tile, there will always be a slight difference in the physical properties of the tile. Most commonly this will be noticeable as a slightly different shade/colour.
At Dufferin Tile, we can guarantee that the tiles you order will be the same shade within your order. However, if you make multiple orders, we cannot guarantee that the shade of each order will be the same. This is one of the reasons why we recommend ordering 10% extra tile on every project.
What tiles are suitable for outdoors?
We recommend using porcelain tile for outdoors. Porcelain tiles are designed not to absorb water. In the winter, when the water freezes, it will not crack the tiles like a porous material.
We also strongly recommend using textured/contoured tiles to reduce the chance of slipping in the winter. Please see the category "Outdoor Applications" under products to see a list of our tiles and installation materials that you should use for your project.
What is the difference between glossy and polished?
A lot of wholesalers and retailers use the umbrella term "glossy" to refer to any tiles that have a surface that is shiny/reflects light. At Dufferin Tile, we aim to be more specific.
"Glossy" means that the tile has a layer of shiny coating applied on top (like lacquer). This tends to give vibrant colour, and is most commonly seen in subway tiles & wall tiles.
"Polished" means that the tile has a special glaze that has been polished down mechanically with polishing paddles. Polishing leads to a more perfect reflection than a gloss coating.
What is the difference between honed and matte? What are R ratings?
Matte is a general term that refers to a material that does not shine or reflect light. Matte tiles can have a smooth or rough texture.
Honed is a term to indicate that the product has been smoothed down with polishing pads but not enough for it to become shiny.
R ratings are a system to determine levels of slip resistance. R9 tiles are sufficient for the vast majority residential and commercial applications. Typically, requirements for a higher R value are in wet industrial environments.
Why do my tiles look different in person than in the picture?
Tiles can look different in person and in pictures for a variety of reasons, such as the lighting of the area and the difference in shade or dye lot.
If you have a strict demand for shade or colour for your project, we would recommend using the sample service on our website to be able to take a look at the colour of our current batch of tile.
Why are my matte and polished tiles different colour if they are the exact same product?
Firstly, there are differences in light reflection between different finishes of tile. This will impact the colour visible by your eyes.
Additionally, matte and polished tiles may have a slightly different glaze composition. The properties of the glaze will lead to some slight changes in the colour of the dye used to make the images.
What is the difference between tiles made in different countries?
Regardless of the origin, every tile that we offer at Dufferin Tile is of First Quality. There are international standards that every one of our manufacturers adhere to.
Between different countries, you will find a major difference between European and Asian products.
European manufacturers favour quality over quantity. They spend more time and resources to develop their collections. Their designs more closely resemble natural materials. Each design will typically have more unique images ("faces") to reduce receptiveness when the tile is laid on a surface. Their quality control practices are more thorough.
Tiles manufactured in Asia, while still of good quality, do not have the same time and resources put into the design as European products.
How long are products out of stock for?
At Dufferin Tile, we are direct importers. That means each tile is shipped from overseas specifically for our stock. Typical transit times for new shipments can be as long as 2-3 months. So any tile could get back in stock as soon as the next day or in months.
We recommend checking scheduled arrival for a particular product by either calling at 416-674-4500 or by sending us an e-mail at sales@dufferintile.com.
